UM @ Wyoming CowboysGame Thread (4pm 8-30f-14)

Postby Grizfan-24 » Sat Aug 30, 2014 10:33 am

I'll try as much today to provide some game insight. Provided I don't fall asleep mid-game.

Couple of pre-game thoughts...

#1: I wouldn't ever under-estimate Bohl's ability to transition Wyoming into a better FBS program, but I think he might take his lumps for a while. That being said, Wyoming portends to be more physical in the O/D Line than the UofM. This game is likely to be tight, but I think Wyoming probably has more bodies and a little more beef.
#2: I wouldn't underestimate the Offensive Line. From what I have heard (little) that this group is a bunch of eager learners and willing to bring their hardhats to work. JJ will have the ability to create, but the chances are going to be limited. If the UofM is going to win, they have to take advantage of those opportunities when they get them.

What I would look for:
Offense:
1. Where Wyoming gets pressure from.

2. Whether Canada can find running room inside.

3. Can Van make a difference on the edge.

4. Can Montana attack the edges vertically.

5. How does Montana deal with the pressure.

Defense:
1. How Wyoming is running the ball. If the have to bounce, that is a win for the Griz.

2. How the LB's hold up against the run.

3. Can our LB's and CB limit what is likely to be NDSU's preference on possesion passing.

4. Safety play. Are our safeties the top tacklers.

5. Can UofM apply pressure w/ the down four.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Possession number one: The first observation I can make is that it's pretty apparent that the offensive coordinator's are very well aware of that they don't want to put the offensive line in positions of stress so they have really short passing game concepts.

Defensive position number one:
very apparent that it had North Dakota State's philosophy on offense lots of inside the tackles straight downhill running. D line struggled early. But as the drive wore on, the Griz line figured things out.

I'll go to Wyoming second possession. What's interesting is that almost immediately there's a different tone and tenor as to what it seems that what Montana wants from its defense. Wyoming's making plays but it's not apparent that Wyoming possesses you know any amount of skill or strength it's better than what what Montana has.

But if this continues, it's going to be very very difficult for the Grizzlies stay close because already they got two short possessions with Wyoming's two longer ones.

But things are going Wyoming's way, they're limiting grizzly offense possessions and limiting to one or two possessions per quarter.

Wyoming is getting us with short underwear out some possessions and then as a want to do that were playing a real soft cover two shell.

Holmes with a big play, forces a turnover.

Montana possession three

Van in the backfield and as I noted a lot last year he's fleet of foot enough that with in the tackles he's able to switch directions much quicker than Canada can. Two quick sort of misdirection cutbacks and van was able to get the first first down since the first possession.

coaches seem to be aware that they need to take some time off the clock because they've gone straight power in this possession.

Great scramble by Johnson to find Henderson and that just points out really how good of a play maker Johnson is. Converts the third and long

The first two possessions seem to be more of a West Coast style offense hoping to get Wyoming caught offguard. This is more of what Montana ran last year. Coach is doing a very nice job at moving the pocket help out the O line. out very very little five-step drops.

Wow! Ryan Burke who I believe was a former quarterback at one point in his career at billings central the reverse pass finds by Missoula Loyola product Josh Jansen. Really savvy call.

Bungled snap hold gets the PAT blocked and kicking continues to be a problem. This one however is not on the kicker

A three and out from Wyoming. Wagenmann is an absolute beast.

Canada needs to be more secure with ball. Sort of holding like a loaf of bread.

A good chance to grab momentum and the first two plays were spottily executed. Canada has the habit to skate on zone and doesn't cut up sharply. Van absolutely blows up a Wyoming defender on a Johnson scramble. Love that look already.

Wyoming sending heat now to get to Johnson. Putting stress on that young o line. Smart move by Wyoming . Johnson just a bit off on the pass to jones. Punt forced.

Wyoming: really good discipline by the d line on stretch , Wyoming struggling to contain Wagenmann. Great screen call on third and long.

Doing a good job on play action, speed of uofm lbs making a difference. Wagenmann is a beast. Looks the part of a fbs player.

Blocked punt. Doesn't get a hand on the outside rusher. Not shaws fault. What Wyoming needed.

These are the type of plays that turn these games.

Big play by Kose. Terrible decision by the Wyoming q. Wagenmann again causing stress.

Johnson not on same page. Really struggling. Trying to anticipate pressure and just in a hurry to move the pocket.

Just getting the ball out of his hand too quick. Might be a product of a fall camp of unsettled o line.

Doesn't want options in middle. Forced to punt.

The half ends with a fizzle.

Couple of thoughts:

If Johnson is on, this game is a lot different.

Defense is holding its own. Wagenmann has been a force.

So far a well managed half. Giving the offense to ability to find a rhythm. I would bet that is the case. Johnson needs to attack the middle, and that seems to be the larger issue so far. Wants to overthrow a lot of balls.

Defense should expect more of the same, power, trap, and stretch. As long as Wyoming isn't hitting on play action, the Griz seems to have the personnel to hang. Wyoming might try to get their qb in rhythm with some short passing concepts. He was uber flustered at the end of the half.

Montana second half possession number one

Three runs to open half. All of them putrid. Great punt and coverage.

Gonna have to do something on the offensive side.

Wyoming drive two:

Burns a t.o. after a power play.

Grizzly defenders tearing at footballs. D line playing with confidence.

Wyomings answer on third and long: screens. They are trying not to demoralize the kid.

Griz get a big play from uber athletic peevy. Gets a hand on punt.

Van with the fast screen, gets a big gain. Smart idea.

Just nothing inside to run. Need to do it, but getting no results.

Goes for it on 4-10 on about the 35. Took a sack on a terrible blitz pick up.

Terrible pass by the Wyoming quarterback but is rewarded because the receiver trips but Harris runs right over the top. Bad luck. Pi moves the ball.

Play action the Y am in quarterback finds a receiver wide open and a couple of missed tackles and they get a first down inside the Montana 30 yard line. Interesting is that Wyoming is in vacating their playbook at all and they're starting to find some success not because of big plays or anything it's rather because Montana's made a couple mistakes in missed tackles and assignments.

First down for Wyoming at the 5 yard line. Wyoming gets a touchdown in a series the first time all day the Montana's defense just look purely undisciplined. Wyoming now up at 10 to 6. That missed PAT is now looming large.

The Montana D has been pretty stout all day. However the Montana offense has looked purely anemic. They need to put a drive together or two here. Jordan Johnson hasn't been or been allowed to be Jordan Johnson all day maybe we'll see here in this position toopen up the playbook a little bit more and allow him to make some plays.

Cause right now it's not as if Wyoming is kicking our butt upfront or in any facet of the football game to be honest. This is about mistakes and Wyoming has made fewer.
