#4 Montana @ #1 NDSU

Postby Grizfan-24 » Sat Sep 20, 2014 12:48 pm

* Mother of all battles *

Good gravy...

-I really don't think UofM will be awestruck.
- I like the role of the under dog.

NDSU's First Possession:

NDSU with a clinic in the first possession. Right now NDSU far more assertive.

NDSU changing looks on the first possession. Able to drive to FG range and the Griz stiffen.

A lot of different looks from NDSU that prevented the UofM from walking another safety down in the box. A lot of ace and attacking the edges.

Good work by UofM not falling for the screen, and NDSU kicks a field goal.

Missed the Griz first possession as ESPN froze on me.

and come back to a long run by Crockett.

Already down to the 20 yd line of the Griz, so far no going the direction UofM probably wanted.

Maybe need to weather the storm.

Get a huge stop on 4 and inches.

Montana's Second possession (my first)

- Montana can't handle the pressure on 3rd down. Forced to punt.

Hard to evaluate much of anything off of that possession...

Punt Returned all the way down the 10, negated by a block below the waist.

-NDSU saying come and get us, and Hermanson fills the gap hard.

- NDSU focusing on play action away from over load formations. Really trying to formation the UofM.

- So far the DL isn't able to get pressure. Went with only 4 man pressure.

- NDSU so far with 90% of the possession. This so far is about the D being on the field for all the first quarter.

- Gives up a seam pattern to the TE down to the 10.

- Griz look great stringing plays out. NDSU has had success getting to the edge in power sets. Wants to use receivers for fly sweeps. That seems counter to what NDSU has done to make them successful.
- Wagenmann gets pressure and Wentz gets away with a circus pass.

-Griz force a field goal. D-offsides but NDSU elects to kick the field goal again...6-0.

- In the whole scheme of things, with NDSU owning the first quarter in possession, 6-0 is a fair result.

* A few of thoughts so far...

1. UofM can't sustain what is going on right now. This will get ugly if the offense can't get first downs.

2. The defense hasn't looked overmatched, bending but not breaking.

3. NDSU's defense seems to be omnipresent.

4. The offense just seems flustered, not by anything that is going on in the NDSU's scheme but rather just not confident.

UofM's Third Possession:

- A mistake in checking out of a play...Goes from 2-7 to 2-12.

- Offense completely out of sync. A bubble screen nets 11. Griz have to punt.

- The bubble and lateral stuff is going to what is effective.

*seems like the shotgun has been firmly aimed at the offenses foot so far. Expected a little better showing.

*Big possession for the defense.*

Important to get off the field.

- I get the sense NDSU is being cute.

-Griz go with 3 man pressure and the cross route picks one defender off...and get the first down with a crossing pattern..

- NDSU gets teh UofM in a soft zone, Wentz is taking the easy routes...

- UofM defense is fatigued. Doing okay with the run game, but struggling with TE's. Very well prepared.

- Weakside power. Short of the first down. Montana forces yet another field goal. This game right now feels like a blow out and it is 9-0.

* in a battle of defensive lines, so far NDSU's is impacting the game a lot more...

* That big fourth down stop early in the game seems to loom large.

Offense Possession #4:

Cannot be understated...This is all about the offense right now. A total of 9 plays...

A HUGE play by Jones. A 71 yard pass to Jones. A double move that flipped the hips to the safety...

- Canada with a 4 yard TD run. Griz down 9-7.

This game is just plain weird.

2 plays. TD. A weird feel to this game so far.

NDSU Possession:

- Lets see if this helps the D.

- NDSU so far surgical in the passing attack.

- I like the discipline of the DL in the running attack. Need to find some leveraged downs to put NDSU in deeper passing situations.

- I think coaches are rotating the DL to keep them fresh. A 15 minute time advantage is quite a difference in the second quarter.

-Wentz gets all the time he wants. A missed hold...

-A missed tackle. NDSU having success to the boundary.

- Secondary giving a lot of respect...So far NDSU more mistake prone...an illegal block...

- NDSU crowd is getting chippy.

- Peevy get a sack that puts NDSU in a 3rd and forever...

- Forces yet another FG.. This one from 49. 12-7 NDSU.

- Henderson dinged up on play action...

- Johnson took a shot but completes the pass with a vicious NDSU stunt. For a first down conversion.

- Griz bubbled on power. Canada can't go anywhere.

- Henderson with a circus catch right over the top of NDSU's littlejohn who probably should have been flagged for PI. In Tampa 2 coverage. Reviewed. A bit of riverboat gambler by Johnson who effectively threw into triple coverage. Threw to the one spot that wasn't protected by a bison defender.

- Little john with a vicious hit, takes Saylor's helmet off. Call was targeting, a bit sketchy on the call...will be reversed.

- Canada gets little on the first down and goal from the 5.

- Van with a pass in the flat, ball on the up field side..van loses momentum gets to the three.

- Just baffling how this game has played out in the first half. NDSU calls a timeout, with 3rd and goal from the 3 yard line.

- Emmanuel just crushes Johnson on 3rd and Goal.

- Sullivan with the FG and the Griz trail 12-10.

10 min TOP at half for NDSU. We are in huge trouble unless we start putting TD'S on the board. FG's won't win it

First half observations:

1. Montana offense struggling with the speed of NDSU. Thought that might be the case. Two big drives in the first half were the result of huge plays by the WR's. NDSU has to be a bit frustrated in this regard. Has the UofM completely contained...

2. The Montana Defense honestly while giving up a ton yardage has done quite well at not breaking. Given up some big plays.

In the second half:

The Griz have to sustain some drives. (DUH) They have tried but rather ineffectively to run the football. Mostly because of some dumb mistakes, there has been little effort to run the ball. Canada with a handful of carries. For the Griz to have a chance at winning this game they need to take some air out of the ball and be able to run vertically. That has obviously proven difficult.

Maybe just as importantly the defense has to force a NDSU punt. So far Wentz has made every play in the passing game. He has had tons of time to find open receivers. Wagenmann actually took a number of plays off in the first half. Largely product of the nearly 15 minute time advantage. Hopefully he can assert his presence. Really surprised with the coverage choices. Really though Gregorak would be more aggressive with this coverage. Gonna have to bring some pressure eventually.

In a battle of stud DE's NDSU's Emmanuel presence has been felt more at this point. Wagenmann needs to enter mandingo mode in the second half.

Yup. I agree. You have to feel a little bit like UofM played with house money late in the first half. Wonder if that changes the thought pattern. No sense in babying it at this point. Down by two at half in a game that NDSU at least in terms of statistics has dominated.

You should have seen our DL players in the locker room at half. Didn't look like they would get off the floor for the 2nd half
